How to make a rekenrek
A Teachtopia guide on how to make a rekenrek

A rekenrek is a helpful math tool for teaching number sense, addition, and subtraction. Students can use it to see numbers, break numbers apart, and combine numbers up to 20.
Some teachers also call a rekenrek a number rack or math rack.
These directions will show you how to make a durable rekenrek that can be used year after year. If you are making them for a classroom, consider making a full class set.

Safety Note: Adult supervision is required. Cutting dowels and using a hot glue gun can be dangerous for children.
Materials Needed for Each Rekenrek
Each rekenrek requires:
- 10 red pony beads
- 10 white pony beads
- 4 small craft sticks
- 2 wooden dowels, each cut to 5 inches
If you are making rekenreks for an entire class or grade level, purchase enough supplies for the number of rekenreks you plan to make.
Step-by-Step Directions
- Cover your table or floor with newspaper, cardboard, or another protective covering. This will help prevent hot glue from sticking to the surface.
- Cut two wooden dowels to 5 inches each. Each dowel should be 1/8 inch in diameter.
- Lay two craft sticks vertically. These will become the left and right sides of the rekenrek.
- Place the two dowels horizontally across the craft sticks. One dowel should be near the top, and the other should be near the bottom.
- Hot glue the dowels onto the craft sticks. Make sure the dowels are straight and securely attached.
- Add the beads to each dowel. On each dowel, thread 5 red beads first, followed by 5 white beads.
- Once the beads are on both dowels, glue another craft stick on top of each side. This will sandwich the dowels between two craft sticks on the left side and two craft sticks on the right side.
- Let the glue dry completely before using the rekenrek.
You have now made your own durable rekenrek!
